UPDATE: Suspect in fatal Fall River stabbing appears in court

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — The suspect in a fatal stabbing at a rooming house in Fall River has now been charged with murder according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and was arraigned in Fall River Monday.

42-year-old Pedro Fernando Orellano Alvarado was charged with murder, an upgraded charge from the original assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charge he was given.

He pleaded not guilty and the prosecution is asking he be held without bail.

Police responded to Tripp Street around 10 p.m., where 44-year-old Joseph Bump was found to have suffered multiple stab wounds and was transported to Saint Anne’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The murder reportedly stemmed from a fight between Alvarado and Bump after a day of drinking.

The stabbing was caught on video by a neighbor.

Police also report Alvarado admitted to stabbing Bump after he was taken  into custody and claimed it was self-defense.

Both Alvarado and Bump were residents of the rooming house.

Alvarado is due back in court for a pre-trial conference on May 10th.
