RISPCA announces passing of longtime head, Dr. Ernest Finocchio

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced the passing of its President Emeritus, Ernest J. Finocchio on October 26, due to complications stemming from the COVID-19 virus.

Dr. Finocchio served as the 10th President and General Agent of the RISPCA for 18 years, until his retirement in March 2019.

A statement from the RISPCA described Finocchio as a “tireless and dedicated crusader for animal welfare,” who was respected for his advocacy on behalf of all animals.

ABC6 viewers will recognize Finocchio as the longtime host of the “Pick of the Litter” segments on ABC6 News at Noon, where the doctor sought to find caring homes for a wide variety of pets needing adoption.

Finocchio was one of the first veterinarians in the state to specialize in equine medicine, and he owned and operated New England Horse Care Center for 32 years.

In his time at the RISPCA, Finocchio successfully advocated for enhancements to Rhode Island’s animal welfare laws, expanded the Society’s volunteer base, and instituted major improvements to the shelter and facilities.

Finocchio also founded the Marvin Fund, named after the disabled black Labrador Retriever that was his beloved companion.  The fund continues to provide  financial assistance for veterinary care to low income pet owners, assisting thousands of pets over the years.

Finocchio was also named the Veterinarian of the year by the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Society in 2019.

Due to COVID-19, a funeral service is will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Dr. Finocchio to the Marvin Fund at www.rispca.com or by calling 401-438-8150 x5.
