PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A Swedish video game publisher announced Thursday that it has purchased intellectual property from former Rhode Island based developer 38 Studios.

THQ Nordic, based in Karlstad, Sweden, announced that they have finalized the acquisition of “Kingdoms of Amalur”, the intellectual property related to 38 Studios’ sole video game, “Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning”, released in 2012.

THQ Nordic said the sale also covered the acquisition of “Project Copernicus”, a massively multiplayer online game that was left unfinished when 38 Studios declared bankruptcy in 2012.

38 Studios, founded by former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, relocated to Rhode Island in 2011 under a $75 million loan guarantee from the state.

The studio declared bankruptcy and closed in 2012, leaving Rhode Island taxpayers on the hook for millions of dollars.

While the acquisition itself was handled by the THQ Nordic parent company, daily operations regarding the property i.e. sales and distribution and any new content will be be handled by subsidiary THQ Nordic GmbH, based in Vienna, Austria.
