WAKEFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island has some of the highest commercial healthcare premiums paid by families and employers in the United States, according to a recent report from the Rhode Island Business Group on Health.

From 2012 to 2022, health insurance premium costs in Rhode Island rose from 23 to 28% of median household income.

In that same time period, Rhode Island’s ranking in highest premiums rose a slot from 14th most expensive in the nation to 13th.

Hospitals ranked as the highest medical expense that commercial health insurance premiums cover.

“The unsustainable trend of higher commercial health insurance premiums will continue unless all parties paying for and delivering health care take decisive action now,” said Al Charbonneau, RIBGH executive director.

The key expenses commercial health insurers cover are medical care itself, insurer’s operating costs and state taxes, assessments and fees.
