New Bedford woman expected in court on 39 animal cruelty charges

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — This morning a New Bedford woman is expected in court on animal cruelty charges.

26-year-old Alex Santin is due in court today for a pre-trial hearing.

Santin faces 39 counts of animal cruelty.

She was arrested on the same day her mother, 46-year-old Korina Ferreira, was sentenced for the same charges.

Both Santin and her mother were charged in connection to a 2020 animal cruelty investigation at a home on Cedar Street.

A new investigation about the condition of animals in their home was opened this month after more animals were found in deplorable conditions.

Santin has since been released on bail under the condition that she surrenders all the animals.

Meanwhile her mother was sentenced to one year in prison and five years probation.
