Connecticut man confesses to burning stolen car in Scituate

SCITUATE, R.I. (WLNE) — Police said a Connecticut man confessed to stealing a car and burning it in Scituate last month.

The Scituate Police Department said 23-year-old Darrian Phillips admitted he stole a car out of Dayville, drove it to Scituate, and lit it on fire at Tasca Field on March 20.

Detectives investigating the incident reported video footage from several businesses in the area showed Phillips purchasing a gas can, lighter, and gasoline the morning of the incident.

Phillips was in the custody of Warwick police on an unrelated shoplifting charge when a warrant for his arrest was issued on March 26.

Officials said Phillips was transferred to Scituate custody and “fully confessed” to the crimes.

He was charged with fourth-degree arson and possession of a stolen motor vehicle, per authorities.
