Dighton hit-and-run suspect out on bail

DIGHTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The suspect in a deadly hit-and-run crash in Dighton is now out of police custody.

19-year-old Michael Laboy of Providence was taken into custody yesterday morning while he was working at an auto shop in Taunton.

He was arraigned in court on multiple charges including leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death.

Laboy is charged in connection to the deadly hit-and-run last week on Thursday, April 4.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office an off-duty officer found 57-year-old Paul Demoura lying on the side of route 44 with severe injuries.

Demoura later died at the hospital.

In court Thursday prosecutors say police connected Laboy to the crime after speaking with his girlfriend.

She claims Laboy had been using her car and admitted to hitting something on the road but thought he hit a deer.

“We’ve also learned that Mr. Laboy went to Walmart the following day on April 5 to purchase a car cover. He returned to the scene and covered the car before he went to work that day,” said the prosecuting attorney.

Laboy was released on $2,000.

He’s also been ordered not to drive after the court found Laboy’s license has been suspended in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Laboy is due in court once again on May 15.
