Safety certifications likely to hold up South Coast Rail opening

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — We’re hearing from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority this morning about more delays on the South Coast Rail opening.

The project to connect New Bedford, Fall River, and Taunton to Boston by rail is still working on safety certifications.

That means trains very likely won’t be running by July, according to the community engagement director.

A representative from the MBTA, shared a statement with ABC6 about the delays that reads in part “In conjunction with a recent change in the project’s management, a new project executive has been tasked with evaluating all aspects of the project, including the schedule. The MBTA will share more information once this review is complete.”
