IRS announces tax extension for Rhode Islanders affected by January flooding

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in areas of Rhode Island affected by the severe storms and flooding of January 9, 2024.

According to the IRS, these taxpayers may now have until July 15, 2024 to file federal individual and business tax returns and make payments.

The July 15, 2024, deadline applies to individual income tax returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2024.

In light of the disaster declaration issued by FEMA, households and individuals that reside or own a business in Kent, Providence and Washington counties could qualify for tax relief.

The relief also applies to quarterly estimated tax payments which are normally due January 16, April 15 and June 17.

The July 15, 2024, deadline also applies to affected businesses:

  • Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on Jan. 31 and April 30, 2024.
  • Calendar-year partnership and S corporation returns normally due on March 15, 2024.
  • Calendar-year corporation and fiduciary returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2024.
  • Calendar-year tax-exempt organization returns normally due on May 15, 2024.
