SOMERSET, M.A. (WLNE) — Police have identified the young woman, who died when her car collided with a police cruiser early Friday morning.
20-year-old Hailey Allard, from Somerset, was driving northbound on Route 138, when she collided head-on with an officer, who was responding to another emergency call.
"It was a bad scene," said Mike Murray, who lives on the corner of Riverside Ave. and Westhill Ave., where the crash occurred.
The accident scene this morning was gruesome, after a marked Somerset police cruiser collided head–on with a green Honda Civic.
"I saw the police officer’s car in the bushes,” said Murray.
“He was bleeding bad, and I saw another car that spun around across the street."
The crash happened at 12:35 Friday morning.
Murray, who witnessed the immediate aftermath says the officer got out of his vehicle and began on the other driver.
"You see the police officers cruiser, and I can’t believe he even got out and did what he did if you look at his car,” said Murray. “I mean his whole front end was smashed up to his windshield. It was bad."
"That’s just the type of officer he is,” said Somerset Police Chief, George McNeil. “He’s a good officer."
The victim, 20–year–old Hailey Allard of Somerset, was transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The officer was treated for head injuries at Rhode Island Hospital and released.
"He seems to be doing fine,” said Chief McNeil. “He has been sent home."
Massachusetts State Police are still investigating the crash to see if distractions or impairment were factors.
But for neighbors at this normally quiet intersection, “it’s just tragic,” said Murray.
