Providence City Council to review low income housing ordinance

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence City Council will take a look at 8-law housing, more commonly known as low income housing, where rent is kept below 30 percent of tenants’ income who are making less than 80 percent of the median income.

Currently, 8-law provides a tax incentive for housing development, but city councilors feel the law has been too relaxed, and introduced this ordinance keep a closer eye on how this incentive is used.

If passed it would put forward a new set of reporting requirements on how this incentive is used, when its used, and provide a yearly report to see that its being used mainly for low income housing projects.

Council president Rachel Miller said they feel confident in the passage of this ordinance after its first reading and support from the finance committee.
