UPDATE: Nine people transported with nausea and vomiting from Warwick plaza
WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The Warwick Fire Department has responded to the 300 Quaker Lane plaza for several calls of multiple sick people.
Nine people were transported from the scene at Oak Street Health with nausea and vomiting, according to the Warwick Fire Department.
The department described their condition as non-life-threatening.
“We feel that there was some type chemical, possible a cleaning solution, that entered the sewer system, that then entered the various stores behind me through the sewer system,” said Warwick Fire Chief Peter K. McMichael.
McMichael went on to say that the fire department would continue to ventilate the area using fans in conjunction with present Department of Environmental Management personnel.

McMichael said that the only people in the plaza who showed any symptoms were those that were inside Oak Street Health.
“We did have low readings in some of the other buildings, but only the occupants of Oak Street Health were affected by the fumes,” said McMichael.
McMichael said that the department used a meter that scans for types of volatile chemicals.
“Someone that was cleaning last night possibly mixed two types of chemicals that may have created some fumes, stayed in the building overnight, and when the staff came in in the morning they became exposed to that,” said McMichael.
McMichael said that shortly after the fire department leaves the scene the stores in the plaza will be able to reopen.
