Coast Guard tows disabled New Bedford fishing vessel
"When a ship has a crew that can do anything you need them to do, it makes life very easy."
BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) – The Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma crew rescued a disabled fishing vessel by safely towing it back to shore on Friday.
The crew received reports from the Coast Guard First District Command Center just before 10:30 p.m. on Sunday night. The vessel named Fearless, was reported to be disabled with the crew requesting assistance.
The disabled vessel was located 160 nautical miles east of Nantucket, Massachusetts.
Tahoma’s crew towed the vessel over the span of five days, taking tow on Monday and joining with a commercial towing company near Buzzard’s Bay by Friday.
“When a ship has a crew that can do anything you need them to do, it makes life very easy.” said Cmdr. Eric Johnson, Tahoma’s commanding officer. “Apparently, Fearless also falls into that category. The crew quickly and expertly set the tow and were proactive about monitoring it and communicating during the transit.”
No injuries were reported.
