Disaffiliation of political party passes House in Rhode Island
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island House of Representatives has passed legislation presented by Rep. Patricia A. Serpa.
The bill passed the house on Tuesday.
The Serpa bill would allow independent voters in primary election to automatically disaffiliate from a political party.
Currently, when a voter is not a affiliated with any political party and chooses to vote in a primary, the voter is automatically registered as being affiliated with that party. Voters can now choose to disaffiliate by filling out a form.
The bill is expected to head to the senate, where it is expected to pass.
