‘It looked like a tornado hit’ says owner after truck plows through ice cream shop property
BELLINGHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — A truck plowed through Chevy’s Ice Cream shop’s parking lot Sunday night.
“It looked like a tornado had hit,” said owner Shayna Murray. “It was pretty dark, but I could see there was a lot of damage and it was a significant accident.”
The truck plowed through the parking lot of the shop off Pulaski Boulevard around 7:30 p.m., destroying the store’s sign and fence, just missing a car in the parking lot.
After Murray arrived at her business, she immediately went over to the parked car in her lot.
“She had an infant on her lap,” Murray explained. “The baby was about four months old.”
Authorities said an investigation revealed the driver was speeding when he side-swiped another vehicle and then veered off the road.
The Bellingham Police Department said 38-year-old Robert Marcoux was charged with operating under the influence and operating to endanger.
“We’ve taken every safety precaution there,” Murray said. “Most businesses don’t. We have the bollards everywhere. I don’t really know what else you could do.”
Police said Marcoux was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The spot where the truck crashed is where crowds of people would ordinarily be enjoying their ice cream.
“We are not even upset about this,” Murray said. “Obviously, the person who is responsible for this, that’s a different story. But everyone is sending me their condolences all day and there is nothing for us to be upset about here.”
“This was the best situation,” she added. “We were so close to opening and we had some issues this week and we kept going back and forth.”
Murray said they are working to clean things up on the property and the ice cream shop will be open for business very soon.
