LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) — Community College of Rhode Island Dental Hygiene program graduates from the class of 2024 will host a Community Dental Health Event on May 1 to create free custom mouthguards for local collegiate student-athletes and adults.

Appointments can be made for 9 or 10:30 a.m. on May 1 buy calling CCRI’s Dental Health Clinic at 401-333-7250.

The two-hour appointments include an oral exam, impressions and oral hygiene instructions.

These exams and fittings are provided by the CCRI Lincoln Campus’ Dental Hygiene Clinic.

“Participation in high-contact sports increases an individual’s risk for trauma to the mouth and teeth,” said CCRI Dental Health Programs Assistant Professor Audra Lavoie, CDA, RDH, MA.

“However, the use of a properly-fitted mouthguard has been shown to reduce the risk of dental injury. For this reason, we are very excited to support the local college athletes by providing them with custom mouthguards through this event.”
