Coventry to consider eminent domain of Johnson’s Pond
COVENTRY, R.I. (WLNE) — The town of Coventry will consider purchasing Johnson’s Pond for eminent domain at tonight’s town council meeting.
The town is considering purchasing the pond to maintain the maintenance and redevelopment of the pond, while also protecting the environment and ensure public safety.
For years, the pond has been involved in litigation with the town. Last year, the owner of the pond was issued a cease and desist order after water levels were found to be historically low. Last month, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management issued a safety concern.
It will be up to the courts the amount the town will have to be paid to the owners if the vote is approved. Soscia Holdings bought the water rights for $1.7 million in 2020.
