Taunton police investigating crash that left bicyclist dead

TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Police are investigating the scene of a crash that left one man dead, and sent another to the hospital.

76-year-old Donald MacManus was killed yesterday while he was riding his bike with a 72-year-old Attleboro man on North Walker Street.

Both were struck by a car being operated by a 62-year-old man who police said will not be identified at this time because he has not been criminally charged.

MacManus was rushed to Morton Hospital in Taunton, where he was pronounced deceased.

The Attleboro man was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of significant trauma to his lower body.

A resident in the area, Lilly Brum, told ABC 6:

“It’s scary you know I have kids. I don’t allow my son to ride his scooter because some people, they drive like crazy down here. They forget…people live here. They have kids. They have no compassion, they like think they’re on the highway.”

Police said the driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and did not appear intoxicated.

The driver was cited on scene for motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, and will be summonsed into court at later date.

Another resident, Bucky Collins, who has lived on the road for 40 years said:

“I have two kids and I wouldn’t let them walk down this street, I just wouldn’t. Because of the speed that they travel. And I’ve seen it get busier over the years, from the industrial park its a short cut out to 44. It’s a tough road.”
