Driver charged with DUI in trooper-involved crash

Trooper Struck

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE): A Rhode Island State Trooper was struck while his cruiser was in the breakdown lane of 95 South in Warwick, according to State Police.

The trooper was pulling over a car and was rear-ended, causing the cruiser to crash into the stopped vehicle, according to State Police.

The driver who caused the crash has been charged with DUI and refusal to submit a chemical test.

The trooper and the other driver were not seriously injured.

On Sunday, Rhode Island State Police identified the operator of the vehicle who hit the cruiser as Alfredo Falcon-Benitez, 41, of Central Falls.

Falcon-Benitez failed all field sobriety tests on scene and was brought to State Police Headquarters after he refused to provide a breath sample.

Falcon-Benitez was held overnight and arraigned on the following charges:

  • Driving under the influence of liquor/refusal (first offense)
  • Driving to endanger
  • Operating on a suspended license

He was held on bail ad transported to the ACI pending a bail hearing this upcoming week.

State Police Colonel James Manni said, “I am thankful that the Trooper and other motorist involved were not seriously injured. This is yet another reminder, especially at this time of the year, of the potential tragedy that can occur by deciding to drink and drive. The State Police remain focused on removing impaired operators from the roadways.”
