Community rallies around Burrillville families displaced by fire
The fire displaced three families the day before Christmas Eve.
BURILLVILLE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Burrillville community is raising thousands of dollars for the families displaced by a fire Wednesday night, the day before Christmas Eve.
The fire displaced nine people total. Fortunately no one was hurt.
During the day on Christmas Eve, families flocked to the local middle school to donate housewares, toys, and gift cards.
And on Christmas Eve night, Santa Claus collected more donations for the families on the town common.
“I’m just hoping that Santa can bring a little bit of joy and maybe not just by myself, but with the community, be able to give back to these people,” said Santa. “I mean two days before Christmas – you lose everything?!”
It was a sort of role reversal Thursday night, with people leaving their homes to bring gifts to Santa. By the end of the night, the sacks were stuffed with presents, clothing, gift cards, and money for the three displaced families.
“I just wanted to help out. It’s a horrible time for something like that to happen,” said Kristin Elmhihi who donated clothing.
Those that stopped by the town common Thursday night to donate, said they know the community would rally around them if they needed it, so they want to do the same now.
“If it happened to me I guess I’d want people to do something and let us know we’re all trying to help each other out,” said resident Edward Walker.
Many said events of 2020 inspired the Christmas spirit, more than ever.
“After this year – we have to show that there’s still some good people out there,” said donator Jim Lapierre.
All of the donations are now with the local fire department. Community organization Between the Cracks will disseminate everything to the families.
The cause of this fire is under investigation.
