Special Olympics to kick off opening ceremony

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Special Olympics officially kicks off it’s 2024 summer games with its opening ceremony.

Governor Dan McKee will first deliver remarks at the Special Olympics Rhode Island Law Enforcement Torch Run at 1 p.m.

He will then deliver remarks at the opening ceremony for the summer games at 7 p.m.

Today will include the introduction of Rhode Island’s teams, and will also include the torch run final leg with the flame of hope.

The ceremony will also include the lightning of the Special Olympics Cauldron.

The year’s event will feature over 1,000 athletes from across the state of Rhode Island.
