Brockton set to unveil statue of hometown champion boxer Marvin Hagler

BROCKTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The city of Brockton will unveil a statue of hometown hero and former middleweight boxing champion Marvin Hagler on June 13.
The commission of the $150,000 bronze statue was funded through a state grant secured by Massachusetts Rep. Gerry Cassidy and will be on display in the new Marvelous Marvin Hagler Park.
Hagler finished his storied boxing career with 62 wins and three losses, with 52 wins by knockout and 12 title defenses.
He was middleweight champion from 1980 to 1987 and is credited with helping launch HBO boxing and the pay-per-view fight era.
Hagler retired in 1987 and moved to Italy to pursue an acting career and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993.
He passed away unexpectedly on March 13, 2022 in New Jersey at the age of 66.
“Brockton is known worldwide as the ‘City of Champions,’ largely because of the incredible and historic athletic achievements of Marvelous Marvin Hagler,” Brockton Mayor Robert F. Sullivan said.
