Dighton Fire Department awarded $7,000 for fire prevention education
DIGHTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The Dighton Fire Department has received $7,000 from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services to support its Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) and Senior S.A.F.E. programs.
The funds will be used toward fire prevention and education programs in Dighton schools and within the senior community.
S.A.F.E. has been awarded $4,693 while Senior S.A.F.E. will receive $2,185.
“It is no coincidence that as we’ve increased public education and awareness efforts around fire safety and prevention, especially with vulnerable populations, that injury and death rates associated with fires have dropped drastically,” said Dighton Fire Chief Christopher Maguy.
Since the implementation of the S.A.F.E. program 30 years ago, child fire deaths have decreased by 78% according to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services.
