RIPTA announces it will not cut bus service

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) officially announced Thursday that it will not move forward with proposed service reductions that were to be implemented Saturday, June 15.
The proposed service cuts would have reduced underused routes while prioritizing more passenger frequented routes.
RIPTA also stated that it was stepping up its efforts to recruit more drivers, the shortage of which also contributed to the proposed cuts.
A starting salary increase for new drivers was also implemented in an effort to bolster recruitment.
“While we face challenges with the current driver shortage, we recognize the critical role that public transit plays in the lives of our community. By officially cancelling these service reductions and focusing on hiring new drivers, we aim to maintain our commitment to our passengers. We are dedicated to building a robust workforce to ensure that our transit services meet the needs of everyone who relies on RIPTA every day,” said Christopher Durand, RIPTA Interim Chief Executive Officer.
The onboarding of new drivers might lead to an increase in cancelled trips according to RIPTA.
Cancelled trips will be reported via the Transit app and Google Maps.
