Cranston family welcomes first baby born in Rhode Island in 2021

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A family from Cranston believes they are the first to welcome the state’s first baby born in the state in 2021.

Evelyn Rose Hughes was born at 4:30 a.m. Friday at Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, weighing 6-pounds and 4-ounces.

Her mom, Kelsey, said Evelyn was actually due Saturday but arrived a day early. Evelyn is the first known baby to be born in the state in the new year.

“It definitely was a surprise. We didn’t think at all she would be, being that late in the morning, but it’s nice. Everybody at work’s been joking, ‘Oh maybe you’ll have the New Year baby!’ so it’s kind of exciting to say we did,” Hughes said in a Zoom interview with ABC6. “I was very close to the end so I wanted the baby out.”

Evelyn is the second child for the Hughes family.
