JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Residents from Simmons Village Apartment returned to their apartment yesterday after a devastating fire in 2023.

Officials at the time said that the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette.

The incident left many senior residents at Simmons Village Apartment without homes.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Rhode Island, Bob’s Discount Furniture, St. Vincent de Paul-USA Disaster Services Corporation, came together to get those effected by the fire back in their homes while also providing necessary household essentials.

“Bob’s [Discount Furniture] has stepped up beautifully, they came through for us,” said Michael Vieira, District Council President of Providence, and for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

“We don’t just come in for a couple of days and say, ‘Okay, we’ve done what we need to do.’ We’re there right to the end. They’re back in their homes. They’re back where they belong,” he said.
