Newport County YMCA closed due to sauna malfunction

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Middletown Police Department said that the Newport County YMCA will be closed Saturday after a malfunction in the steam system in one of the facility’s saunas injured a woman.

The department said firefighters responded to the facility around 9 a.m. for a “possible explosion” and evacuated the building.

It was discovered that one of the saunas was malfunctioning, and when its door was opened, the excessive steam triggered the sprinkler system.

A 58-year-old Barrington woman suffered minor non-life threatening injuries.
