RIEMA shares heat-related illness signs to watch for amid hot stretch

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency is encouraging residents to take precautions amid excessive heat through the end of this week.

RIEMA officials said locals should limit exposure to the heat by staying indoors, staying well hydrated and wearing light, breathable clothing.

There is a heat advisory in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Friday evening for non-coastal counties of Southern New England.

Officials said those in areas significantly impacted by the heat should watch for signs of heat-related illness.

RIEMA offered some important signs of heat-related illnesses to be aware of:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Pale skin
  • Weakness
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Rapid pulse
  • Fainting

Officials said heat can be especially dangerous for younger children, older adults, and those with underlying health concerns.

Providence has opened numerous cooling centers and splash pads to help residents combat the hot conditions.
