McKee kicks off Providence-Newport Ferry season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Gov. Dan McKee joined Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti, Jr. and Seastreak President James Barker Friday to mark the start of the 2024 Providence-Newport Ferry season.

The department said. this year is the ninth that the ferry has been in operation, which was started in 2016 as an “alternative to automobile travel between the two cities.”

RIDOT said almost 285,000 passengers have ridden the ferry since its inception.

The ferry makes four daily roundtrips every day, and also makes weekend stops in Bristol.

Tickets cost $12 each way for adults and $6 each way for children, seniors, those with disabilities, and Medicare cardholders.

“The Providence-Newport Ferry is well-established as a go-to transportation option in the summer between Providence and Newport,” McKee said. “And it remains an affordable option for families to travel between these two great cities.”
