PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — It’s the last thing Warwick natives and identical twins Kevin and Matthew McManus were expecting as the Emmy nominees were announced last Thursday.

"We didn’t even look it up that morning to see if we were nominated because we just didn’t expect it to happen. And then suddenly we’re getting text messages from our friends saying hey congratulations on the Emmy nomination, and we thought like this is a cool joke dude," said Kevin.

Sure enough, they’ve been nominated for outstanding writing on the Netflix original series "American Vandal."

"This whole part of it has been a whirlwind," said Matthew. "It’s pretty unreal," said Kevin.

The show is a mockumentary about the aftermath of a high school prank that left 27 teachers’ cars vandalized with some graphic images.

They say writing these characters wasn’t too much of a stretch.

"You try to really pull from people you actually know, and I feel like there’s a ton of people in Rhode Island that we were pulling from our days in high school," said Kevin.

"The main character Dylan and the Wayback Boys his pals, I mean those guys are so close to the dudes that we grew up with," said Matthew.

The Bishop Hendricken grads, now 31, spent their childhoods filming all over Rhode Island.

"We’ve been making movies since we were kids. Shooting all over East Greenwich, Warwick, Providence," said Matthew.

After all these years and hard work, they say the nomination feels great.

"I think it’s pretty straightforward that we’re not going to win an Emmy. I think it’s pretty straightforward," said Kevin.

"We’re going to get dressed fancy and have a few drinks and have a good time. I can’t believe they’re letting us into the doors of the Emmys. I can’t believe we’re going"
