UPDATE: water search suspended for missing Newport swimmer

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — The water search for a male in his 20s who was reported missing in the water at Brenton Point Park on Ocean Drive in Newport Sunday has been suspended, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The search by the Coast Guard and other agencies covered 122 nautical miles.

The swimmer was reported missing at 6 p.m. in the rocky area known as 12 O’Clock High.

The Department of Environmental Management’s Division of Law Enforcement, the Narragansett Bay Marine Taskforce and U.S. Coast Guard all sent crews to aid in the search.

The search was called off at 8:50 p.m. Sunday night due to the darkness and very rough water.

The search resumed Monday morning.
