Middletown police announce arrest of additional suspect in Newport shooting

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Middletown Police Department has announced the arrest of an additional suspect allegedly involved in a shooting in Newport back on July 5.
24-year-old Kenneth Jenkins was arrested for possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime of violence and possession of a large capacity firearm magazine.
Yesterday, 24-year-old Johnny Escobar of Middletown was taken into custody following an investigation into the incident in the area of Jade Way and Kennedy Road.
After police responded to the area around 1 a.m., they learned a victim had been taken to Newport Hospital by friends.
He was later taken to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
Escobar was charged with possession of firearms by certain persons prohibited, assault with intent to commit specified felonies, license or permit required for carrying a pistol and firing in a compact area.
Jenkins will be arraigned in District Court on Thursday.
