Over a foot of snow in some areas of Rhode Island, slush in others
CHEPACHET, R.I. (WLNE) – While some areas across Rhode Island saw over a foot of snow, others didn’t accumulate much at all.
In a tiny neighborhood in Chepachet, Timothy Bernard and his two dogs are embracing every inch of the snow left behind. The area saw 13 inches of snow covering streets, mailboxes and cars.
“They both love the snow. When the snow lands they go crazy,” Bernard said. “When it started coming down, it was just aggressively coming down. I came out, did the walkway a little bit, basically just watched it come down.”
While many people were out Tuesday morning shoveling the sidewalks and plowing the driveways, others like Timothy were taking the day off saying snow days like this don’t come too often.
“We kind of get used to the snow. Not having it, no, I could never go without having it.”
Just miles away in Providence, it’s a different story. The city was flooded with puddles and covered in slush.
“The storm was kind of like on and off, on and off. It stopped and then it starts to rain,” Steve Mello said.
Mello is one of dozens of crews across the city prepared to take on the storm and clean up the mess, but the mess left behind wasn’t what he expected.
“We’ve got a situation where it’s really slushy and you’ve got to come back and tighten everything up,” Mello said. “Trying to get the handicap ramps clear because that’s important, throw down a layer of salt so it doesn’t ice over.”
Whether its snow, slush, or ice, today was all about clean up so people could get back to work and school as soon as possible.
State Police say they investigated 24 crashes during the storm and none of them were serious injuries. They also assisted 44 motorists. Police say most people listened and stayed home making it less dangerous on the roads.
