New Bedford Police arrest man on weapons charges

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The New Bedford Police Department said it arrested a man on weapons charges following a “disturbance” in the South End on July 7.

27-year-old Marcell Goncalves was charged with carrying a large-capacity loaded firearm without a license, assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and possession of a firearm without a serial number.

Police responded to the area of David Street and Salisbury Street for reports of a man brandishing a firearm.

When an officer arrived, they allegedly found Goncalves, who tossed away a bag he was carrying and attempted to flee.

After he was taken into custody, a search of his person and the bag allegedly found a pair of brass knuckles, knife, and a a P80 Polymer “ghost gun” with no serial number.

Police said Goncalves had a previous conviction for possession of a firearm, as well as an open case from April, and 19 adult arraignments on his record.
