PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said that a tanker truck spilled nearly 2,500 gallons of oil on the Allens Avenue on-ramp to Interstate 95 in Providence on July 20.

The truck was carrying approximately 11,000 gallons of gasoline when it flipped around 6 p.m.

RIDEM said the truck was removed from the ramp around 5 a.m. Sunday and clean-up efforts are being undertaken by the department alongside New England Disposal Technologies, which was hired by the trucking company.

The responders used fire-fighting foam and vacuum trucks in an effort to contain the spill.

“Contractors have set up multiple layers of floating containment booms to reduce the environmental impacts to the river,” RIDEM added in a statement. “[RIDEM] continues to work with the contractors at NEDT to remove the remaining gasoline from the roadway, catch basins, and river.”

The department said that some sheen from the oil may be visible on the water and that gasoline will “evaporate throughout the day.”
