Flamingo spotted on the Cape is the same one spotted in Little Compton, experts say

LITTLE COMPTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The flamingo spotted on Cape Cod has now possibly made its way to the state of Rhode Island.

In photos shared on the app eBird, birders have captured photos of the flamingo in Briggs Marsh in Little Compton starting on Thursday, July 18 all the way up until Sunday, July 21.

social media post last week by the Town of Yarmouth showed the flamingo was seen walking near the Bass Hole Boardwalk.

Last month a flamingo was spotted at Chapin Beach in Dennis, and there is speculation that this could be the same one.

The Audobon Society of Rhode Island did confirm with ABC 6 that they thought this was the same flamingo.

According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, the American Flamingo is known to the Caribbean and along the northern coast of South America.

Mass Audubon in Cape Cod Mark Faherty told ABC 6 back in the beginning of June that flamingos have escaped zoos but are typical to Florida, usually flying North when they’re faced with captivity or hurricanes — a hurricane this September dispersed some, and the birds were spotted in strange new places.

The journey from Yarmouth, MA to Little Compton, is about 75 miles via car. (WLNE)
