Boston city councilors to discuss closure of hospitals under Steward Healthcare, future of employees
BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Time is running out for two hospitals run by the bankrupt Steward Health Care, as Boston council members and hospital staff work to try and save the hundreds employed in the facilities.
Steward Heath Care filed for bankruptcy all the way back in May, and has been the focus of several investigations of fraud and corruption.
With an August 31 deadline to shut down Nashoba and Carney Hospitals, the clock is ticking to save this from being a catastrophe.
According to officials with Steward Health, the closures would lead to around twelve hundred nurses, medical practitioners, and staff being laid off.
Staff protesting outside of Carney Hospital met Monday ahead of a meeting in Steward’s bankruptcy case set for this morning, and officials in Boston are looking to try and ease the burden on Bay State residents.
One council member set to propose a public health emergency in Boston to try and keep Carney Hospital open through a mix of city, state, and federal resources.
That discussion will be had on Wednesday at Boston’s city council meeting, and Steward’s bankruptcy hearing is set for 10 a.m. today in Houston, Texas, which is Steward’s headquarters.
