Overseas Bitcoin scam targeting Woonsocket-area residents takes $100,000 in recent weeks

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — A scam originating from overseas has stolen $100,000 from Woonsocket-area residents in the last few weeks, according to Woonsocket police.
Scammers are contacting residents and telling them that their WiFi, TV, internet, PayPal or bank accounts have been hacked.
They then ask the victim to withdraw and pay them in Bitcoin to fix the hack.
Police are urging residents to not send any money or cryptocurrency and if you are targeted in this scam to call 401-766-1212.
