PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – With the Fourth of July right around the corner, State Police urge drivers to drive sober.

“We want people to enjoy holiday celebrations and events with family and friends, however we will not tolerate those who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, putting the lives of everyone else at risk,” Colonel Assumpico said.

As part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over efforts, police patrols have been increased as of Friday, June 29.

Police have since arrested seven individuals for DUI, as well as pulling people over for speeding, not wearing a seat belt, and using handheld electronic devices that violate the new Hands Free Law, in effect as of last month.
