Johnston to install cameras at park after alleged attempted kidnaping

Johnston Memorial Park (WLNE)

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The town of Johnston will be installing cameras following an attempted alleged kidnaping last Friday at Johnston Memorial Park.

An 8-year-old camper at Johnston Memorial Park reported they were sitting on a bench at the park when they were approached by a jogger.

The camper told police that the man took out a brown bottle and cloth, wetted the cloth, and asked the child to approach.

The camper yelled for counselors, and the suspect ran into the men’s bathroom, then ran out shirtless towards Atwood Avenue.

In a statement, Mayor Joseph Polisena Jr. said the town would be moving forward with an emergency procurement to install cameras.

“With all that’s been invested in Johnston Memorial recently, we’ve been working on installing cameras in the park for the past few months.  With this alleged incident, we will now go forward with an emergency procurement to install cameras,” he said.

“Security cameras will act as both a deterrent and help identify any alleged suspicious activity. Hopefully this gives residents a peace of mind,” he continued.

The incident is still being investigated at this time.

The suspect is described to be appearing to be in his late 20s or early 30s, 6 feet tall, with olive toned skin, black hair, wearing a white or gray tank top, black and reddish shorts, carrying a large black water bottle and Crossbody bag.
