Providence Police arrest suspect involved in assault and kidnapping in Smithfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Police Department said it has arrested a suspect who was wanted for an alleged assault and kidnapping of an elderly person in Smithfield.
Police observed the suspect’s vehicle on Route 6 East and followed it, where it was found unoccupied on Kinfield Street.
The suspect was eventually found hiding in a basement on the same street.
Bob Adams, the owner of the house where the man was found, said the man had begun dating his mother over the past week.
“So I came out my front door and I just wanted to see what was happening, I’m getting told to put my hands up, so I did, I complied, and it turns out that this guy who my mom had been seeing for literally just under a week snuck into my basement and I don’t know the rest of the details right now, but it’s very jarring,” he said. “I literally just met him two days ago.”
Police said they will be interviewing the suspect in relation to possible stolen motor vehicle charges, and that he will also be interviewed by police from Smithfield and Coventry for incidents in their towns.
ABC 6 News crews on scene on Kinfield Street saw multiple police vehicles blocking the road.
