Providence city councilor sues Gov. McKee for firing

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence city councilor Miguel Sanchez is now suing Governor Dan McKee after he was fired last October.
Sanchez, who worked as an associate in the Governor’s Constituent Services Office said he was fired for his “public position on the atrocities occurring in Gaza.”
“Since Oct. 7, I have used my voice as an elected official to condemn all violence against any innocent civilians,” he told ABC6 last year.
When ABC6 told Sanchez then, who said he does not regret voicing his opinion on the conflict.
In a statement to ABC6 news, Sanchez’s legal team said:
“Non-political employees working for the state of Rhode Island do not lose their first amendment rights when they accept employment. To vindicate the right of Miguel Sanchez, we filed a lawsuit against Governor Dan McKee and two of his senior staff.”
At the time, McKee’s office release a statement and said “words can have the potential to fan the flames of hate and division.”
ABC6 has reached out to McKee’s official for additional comment.
