PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Rhode Island State Police are planning to ramp up patrols this Fourth of July season to keep drivers safe on the road.
Colonel Ann Assumpico said additional troopers have been assigned throughout the holiday weekend as well as next week to enforce all motor vehicle laws and keep motorists safe.
State Police remind motorists to drive responsibly, especially with the additional traffic throughout the holiday week.
Troopers will be looking out for motor vehicle violations, including speeding, aggressive driving and distracted driving, especially with the state’s new hands-free law prohibiting the use of handheld cell phones and other electronic devices while driving.
Colonel Assumpico offered drivers the following safety tips and reminders:
• Don’t drink and drive. If you’re heading to a cookout or other holiday event, arrange for a safe ride home ahead of time.
• Buckle up. Drivers and passengers should wear seatbelts at all times, and children should be properly secured in child safety seats.
• Avoid distractions. Rhode Island now prohibits the use of handheld cell phones and other devices, and it also is illegal to text and drive. Set up your mapping app before you start your car. Pay attention to the road and other motorists at all times.
• Allow extra time. More motorists are expected to travel this weekend and on the holiday, so allow extra time to get to your destination and avoid driving during peak travel periods when possible.
• Stay alert. Drowsy driving can be as dangerous as drunk driving. Make sure you’re well rested before heading out.
Colonel Assumpico encouraged all drivers to help the Rhode Island State Police keep roads safe and to call 911 to report unsafe drivers and any hazardous conditions.
