Family of O’Keefe files lawsuit against Karen Read, 2 bars where couple drank on night he died

CRANSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Karen Read, according to WCVB.

According to the court documents, the suit was filed by Paul O’Keefe, the brother of John O’Keefe.

Read was charged with the murder of O’Keefe and stood trial for his death.

There was a mistrial in the case, however the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office plans to retry it.

The family of O’Keefe is claiming at least $50,000 in damages for “conscious pain and suffering, fear of impending death, wrongful death, lost value to next of kin, severe and profound emotional distress manifesting in bodily symptoms, and other compensable damages.”

The lawsuit has also been filed against McCarthy’s and the Waterfall Bar and Grill, the two bars where Read and O’Keefe were drinking the night he died.

The plaintiffs also listed on the suit are John O’Keefe’s parents and his niece, who he was taking care of at the time of his death.
