New Bedford cuts ribbon on new, fully accessible playground

City and school officials join students to cut the ribbon at a new playground at Carney Academy (WLNE).

NEW BEDFORD, MA (WLNE) — Students in New Bedford are celebrating the opening of a new, fully accessible playground.

A ribbon cutting ceremony at Carney Academy drew a crowd Wednesday.

“The thing about Carney is that it is right on Kempton Street. It’s so visible,” Mayor Jon Mitchell said. “Whatever we do out here, there’s an opportunity for us to proclaim what we’re about, what’s important to us. And what’s important to us in New Bedford is our kids.”

The school department says teachers and staff at the elementary school fundraised and wrote grants for three years to get the project finished.

There are swings for wheelchair-dependent kids who normally wouldn’t get to use them.
