2 arrested in Cranston home invasion, stolen Ferrari theft: 1 faces judge, the other to be extradited
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — It’s a story that seems like it’s right out of a movie.
Two Cranston teens are accused of breaking into a west side home in Cranston with guns, stealing a Ferrari, with one of them leading police on a high-speed chase up and down the East Coast before it all ended in Florida yesterday.
The whole saga started Saturday night, when Cranston police responded to a call for an armed home invasion on the west side of the city around 3 a.m.
Police said 19-year-old Johnathan Costa and his accomplice 18-year-old Logan Slezak of Pawtucket broke into a home on Crest Drive
Police said both teens were masked, carrying handguns, and demanded the keys to the homeowner’s Ferrari parked in the garage.
Costa and Slezak took off, but the Ferrari was soon spotted on 95 South Monday night.
Rhode Island State Police chased it to the Connecticut State Line, with State Troopers eventually losing sight of it.
By Wednesday, the Ferrari was sighted in Flager County Florida, just south of Jacksonville and north of Daytona Beach, Florida.
Two schools were put on lockdown in Saint John’s County, as police believed both Costa and Slezak were in the call and called them “armed and dangerous.”
Sheriff’s deputies picked up the chase again, and other local school were told to be on alert.
Members of local law enforcement then patrolled the area, and spotted a red tarp in a backyard covering what looked like a sports car.
Deputies set up a perimeter around the home and car and arrested Costa, who came out peacefully.
A gun was found inside the home, and police believe the owner of the home has rented to Costa in the past.
There was no sign of Slezak, according to police he never went south and turned himself into North Providence police hours later.
Slezak was arraigned Wednesday on three felonies, and held without bail.
His case is due back in court next Thursday for a status conference
Costa will be extradited back to Rhode Island as a fugitive from justice, although he was arraigned on charges related to the chase in Florida.
Prior to this incident, Costa and Slezak did have a criminal record.
