Providence Police arrest suspects in shooting of 7-year-old

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Police Department has named and located two suspects in the Thursday night shooting of a 7-year-old girl on Florence Street.

19-year-old Ahmari Cabrera, of Providence, and 26-year-old Shaheem Nathaniel, of Cranston, were arrested after being found in a house on Carleton Street Friday morning.

Police added that there appeared to have been an interaction between the suspects and the victim’s family before the shooting, and they are still unsure about a motive.

“This crime has shaken our entire city and shaken me, it’s the first instance of a child being hurt in several years here in our city in this way,” Mayor Brett Smiley said. “And it’s deeply upsetting and I’m sure very concerning to our community.”

The child was in the back seat of a car during the shooting and remains in critical condition at this time.
