FALL RIVER M.A. (WLNE) – Sweet smells of warm pastries fill the air at Camara’s Bakery. Only adding to the bitter sweet feeling for longtime patrons of the Fall River staple, knowing its days are numbered.
After nearly 40-years in business, husband and wife owners, Aires and Lucia Isidiro announced that they’re closing its doors for good on Saturday.
"It’s time, it’s time for us to go … We’re gonna miss it but we’re going to enjoy being home" says Lucia.
But the Isidoro’s aren’t the only ones who are going to miss Camara’s Bakery. Since announcing their closure, the owners say longtime patrons they now consider to be like family have come to bid farewell to the beloved business.
"I was sad because there aren’t many family owned bakeries left in the city and I’m from the south end but I make it a point to come to the north end specifically for this bakery" says frequent customer Sue Mathis.
However, despite the warm thoughts from customers and an abundance of memories the couple has with their business, they are firm believers that it’s their time to close, Lucia adding that “all good things must come to an end.”
Their past 38–years consumed with running the family business. They make up 2 of the 5 employees.
"I come in at 10 and by the time 6 in the morning everything is ready for the customers" says Aires. While he prepares the pastries, Lucia is also staying busy.
"When I come in I fix the donuts, put the donuts in the case. I bake sweet bread, I bag rolls, I wait on customers.” Lucia says.
While the decision to close did not come easy, they’re looking forward to finally getting some time off.
"He’s 67 and who knows how many years you have left so at least this way hopefully we’ll get to enjoy life that we haven’t all these years" says Lucia.
While the couple has gotten a few inquiries from potential buyers, they say that they want to enjoy a vacation before making any decisions.
