7-year-old shot in Providence dies, suspects charged with murder

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Police Department announced Monday that the 7-year-old girl who was shot on Florence Street in Providence, died from her injuries.

Officials said the juvenile victim died at Hasbro Children’s Hospital after more than three days in critical condition.

As a result, police say 19-year-old Ahmari Cabrera, of Providence and 26-year-old Shaheem Nathaniel, of Cranston, are now charged with murder in connection to her death.

Both Cabrera and Nathaniel are expected to appear at the next session of 6th District Court to face the murder charges as well as numerous firearms violations, officials said.

A statement from a spokesperson for Providence police reads in part, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim involved in this tragic incident, resulting in the death of an innocent child. We will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident and further charges may be forthcoming.”

Cabrera and Nathaniel, were arrested after being found in a house on Carleton Street in the early morning hours of August 30.

Police are say they are still unsure as to an exact motive for the shooting that happened on Thursday, Aug 29., but said there appeared to have been an interaction between the suspects and the victim’s family before the shooting.

No further information was immediately released.
