Audubon Society to hold ‘Raptor Weekend’ in Bristol

BRISTOL, R.I. (WLNE) — For the past 20 years, the second weekend of September has been for the birds.

“Raptor Weekend” at the Audubon Society in Bristol is an event full of feathered friends, food, and fun.

It all kicks off Friday evening with “Birds and Brews,” a new addition to the event.

The birds being celebrated this weekend are raptors- a special class of birds.

“Raptors include birds like hawks, owls, falcons… Harris Hawks,” said Sr. Director of Education of the RI Audubon Society, Lauren Parmelee.

Raptors are specialized hunters noted for their powerful talons and sharp, curved beaks.

They are at the top of the food chain and these apex predators help balance the ecosystem by helping control the mice and rabbit populations.

As wonderfully impressive as raptors are, their populations are at risk by our use of pesticides.

That’s why this event is so important- we can get up close to these remarkable birds and learn about them in a fun environment.

“Everyone is welcome… bring a camera,” said Parmelee.

So, this weekend, come get yourself a moist owlet and learn all about these amazing birds.

Plenty of tickets are still available for the Saturday and Sunday Raptor Weekend events.

You can buy them at the event or online at ASRI.ORG.
